Journalists may enter work in divisions of the following categories: newspapers, radio, television, Work for Other Media (freelance) and Internet. Please see each category for a definition and division depending on the size of publication or other factors. You will put the category/division number and letter on your entry form.
This year there are expanded categories for Radio and Television as well as Work for Other Media and Internet, so please take note of those.
You are eligible to enter “work for other media” if you are a journalist who lives in East Tennessee but your work may appear in publications, broadcast, or online within or outside of East Tennessee. This category is meant especially for freelance writers.
You may have more than one entry in a category, but unless it is a category that specifies multiple articles or segments in a single entry, each entry will require a single article or segment (though supporting “sidebars” are optional) and its own entry form and fee.
NOTE: Journalists in all media are encouraged to enter community service work in the Horace V. Wells Jr. Award category. The winner will be judged across all platforms.
The overall “best of show” award, The Golden Press Card, will be selected out of all of the First Place/Awards of Excellence, and the winner will receive a cash award of $100 also.
The organizers and judges reserve the right to change the category of certain entries if necessary. You may enter the same work in different categories if applicable, but separate entry forms and fees are required for all. The judges also may decline to make awards in categories if they feel no entry merits an award.
